A LITTLE ABOUT THE PLANT
Nigella sativa, also called black cumin, blackseed or black caraway, is an annual flowering plant, native to south and southwest Asia.
These spice plants which achieve a height of 30 to 60 cm is a rediscovered medicinal plant that was known to the ancient Egyptians 4000 years ago. After flowering, the plant forms pods similar to poppy in which the seeds, black cumin, are housed. Black cumin is grown primarily in areas of Asia where it has sufficient sun to thrive.
Blackseed is very high in polyunsaturated fatty acids.
Black cumin contains 0.5-1% ethereal oil which has, in addition to antioxidant properties, an antibacterial and antimycotic effect. This gives it its spicy smell and taste.
HISTORY OF MEDICINE
In Islam, blackseed is regarded as one of the greatest forms of healing medicine available.
The seeds have been traditionally used in the Middle East and Southeast Asian countries to treat ailments including asthma, bronchitis, rheumatism and related inflammatory diseases, to increase milk production in nursing mothers, for headaches caused by hormone conditions (in women), to promote digestion and to fight parasitic infections.
Its oil has been used to treat skin conditions, such as eczema and boils, and to treat cold symptoms.
