The knowledge of the powers and energies of gemstones has been handed down even through ancient cultures. If we look back into the history of the peoples of the earth, we time and again come across people who have made intuitive use of nature’s healing powers, who have taken up the lore of their ancestors and passed their own knowledge on to the generations that followed them.
In ancient cultures, such as the Incas, Mayans or Aztecs, the stone slowly lost its function as a tool as time passed. Instead, people began to appreciate the treasures of nature in a different way, and started to produce healing tinctures, pastes, elixirs and powders from gemstones. The newly extracted essences were used in the fields of medicine and cosmetics. During the middle ages, it was above all the great nun and healer Hildegard of Bingen who influenced the course of natural healing practices.
Hildegard of Bingen lived from 1098 to 1179 and is the precursor of gemstone treatment. “For he who is without his wits,” she said, “daub his tongue with sapphire. For it banishes harmful substances. However, he who is deceitful, hot-tempered and bibulous should carry a diamond in his mouth!” She left her mark on both herbal remedies and gemstone therapy, and never lost her intuitive and visionary faculties.
The process of natural healing and relief of physical and spiritual ailments became vital, and it continues to this very day. Therapy with gemstones is thus based primarily on knowledge from mythological lore, and how it acts has not yet been adequately explained in the sense of medical science. Although mythology attributes specific healing effects on the body and soul to each gemstone (this is the source of the term “healing stone”) , and each sign of the zodiac is assigned different stones, the choice of the right stone should in the end be left to the instinct of the user, who is the only person who can feel in tune and ultimately comfortable with the stone! | | | |
